Hurricane Harvey Rebuilding, TX
Hurricane Harvey was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since 2005, coming ashore in Texas with sustained winds over 100 mph. The storm lingered over the Houston Metroplex, dumping more than 40 inches of rain that led to catastrophic flooding, property destruction and loss of life. Houston’s population density particularly in low lying neighborhoods led to damage that will take years to recover and rebuild. But as with Hurricane Katrina and SuperStorm Sandy, Break A Difference will be here for the long haul.
Hurricane recovery and rebuilding is some of the hardest work you’ll ever do, and perhaps the most important. Working closely with local partners, teams of Break’rs will be do demolition – tearing our water soaked sheetrock and insulation before mold takes over. We’ll be restoring homes, community centers and working with the social service agencies like food banks and soup kitchens that are helping residents while they recover and rebuild their lives.
$450 covers ALL COSTS for your week long break, including housing, three meals a day, all local transportation, all volunteer supplies and tools, and exploring the community. We also offer every participant a personal fundraising site, and assistance crowd-sourcing the costs of your trips.
While days vary based on location, and some days are half days with time off to explore the local community, this is our typical schedule.
- Pre-Service Team Meeting
- Volunteer Service
- Post-Service Team Meeting
- Town Hall / Leadership Training
- Lights Out
Breakrs will be housed at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Housing. Cots are provided, along with breakfast and dinner, with a box lunch while Breakrs are out working for the day.
While every Break’r is responsible for their own travel to and from the Houston, we provide pick up and drop off from these three transportation hubs, as well as providing all on-the-ground transportation during the entire week. Houston is served by:
Airports: William P. Hobby (HOU) Hobby and George Bush International
Bus Stations: Houston Station
Amtrak: Houston Station
And for individuals or groups that wish to drive, we provided a gated parking lot for any cars or vans parking during the entire week.
