Break A Difference coordinates Alternative Spring Break (ASB) programs in various cities across the United States. ASB is an immersive week of service program for young adults and students to serve communities by volunteering during their spring breaks. Break A Difference partners with United Way, Boys & Girls Clubs, and other local nonprofits to provide meaningful and impactful service projects. Break A Difference coordinates everything from meals and local transportation to service projects and housing which makes the ASB program extremely cost effective and meaningful to volunteers and those served.

    Focus Areas: Hunger Prevention, Anti-Homelessness

    Project Description: Understanding poverty and increasing access to supportive services are the best means to reduce homelessness. Break’rs staff food banks, upgrade transitional housing facilities and help maintain shelters. Volunteers will get to spend some free time both in Baltimore and Washington, DC.

      Focus Areas: Disaster Rebuilding

      Project Description: More than two years after Hurricane Sandy devastated the Jersey Shore, hundreds of families remain displaced. Led by trained site supervisors, Break’rs will perform basic construction such as hanging drywall, insulating and painting homes to help families return home. A ferry ride to New York City allows everyone to get a taste of the Big Apple.

        Project Description: Homework help, arts & crafts programming and leading athletic activities are ways in which Break’rs take programming at after-school sites to the next level. Trips to the Capitol and national monuments build on the volunteer experience.

          Focus Areas: Disaster Rebuilding

          Project Description: Over the last decade, as New Orleans has rebuilt after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, an array of initiatives have developed not only to replace what was lost, but to build some of the supports that didn’t exist prior. ASB participants may help with urban gardens, youth development programs and environmental projects that help families keep more of their earnings while also reducing their carbon footprint.

            Project Description: The world’s largest military base is the core of this Central Texas community. Military service impacts families in unique ways. This ASB will focus not only on providing direct services to military-connected children, but also to increasing volunteers’ understanding of the challenges and benefits military service provides to families.

              Project Description: Volunteers will assist at various agencies dedicated to preventing homelessness and reducing poverty. Moving beyond the standard tourist sections, Break’rs will explore a bit of what it takes to make ends meet in the nation’s largest city.

                Project Description: Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg and other philanthropists have dedicated millions of dollars to transform the educational experience for Newark youth. Break’rs provide enrichment services in after-school computer labs, arts & crafts, homework help and physical education programming. In addition, a trip to New York City allows everyone to get a taste of the Big Apple.

                    Project Description: Six Boys & Girls Clubs serve the diverse populations that make up Tucson, including one on the Pascua Yaqui reservation. Break’rs will infuse enriched programming into each of these clubs to promote positive youth development. Hiking and visits to Tucson’s historic downtown further enhance volunteers’ experience.
